Study finds that dolphins form friendships just like us

Recommended for Dolphins

Most of us know that dolphins are friendly creatures.

Now research shows that dolphins like to make friendship with other dolphins.

An international team of researchers from the universities of Bristol, Zurich and Western Australia are providing more information on dolphins’ social habits.

  • They did a study in Shark Bay, Western Australia.
  • This is the only place where dolphins have been observed using marine sponges* as tools to forage (search) for food. Dolphins learn this technique from family members.
  • The researchers studied a group of 37 dolphins.
  • They found that males who used the sponge technique were spending more time in the company of other ‘spongers’ than the non-spongers.

That is how the researchers discovered that dolphins make friendships that are based on common interests.

*Marine Sponges: Living animals that are stuck to the floor of the ocean, sea or river. They are simple multi-cellular animals and filter water through their porous body for the food they eat.
