A 10 Year Old’s Poem on Dyslexia

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Here is a lovely poem on dyslexia. It opens our understanding of dyslexia and those impacted with the learning disorder.

In honour of National Poetry Writing Month, here is a lovely poem for you.

Some time back an English school teacher from England, Jane Broadis, shared her student’s poem on Twitter which became very famous.

This powerful poem by her 10-year-old student is about a learning disorder called Dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that can cause problems with reading, writing and spelling. It does not affect intelligence.

The poem has been written as a reverse poem which can be read in two ways. One is from top to bottom, and the other is in the reverse order from bottom to top. Both ways of reading the poem convey a completely different message. The poem goes –

“I am stupid.
Nobody would ever say
I was meant to be great
That is wrong.
I am a failure.
Nobody could ever convince me to think that
I can make it in life.”

Reading from top to bottom shows the low confidence of a dyslexic child. But when we read line by line in reverse order the message changes completely (try reading it in reverse now!). The new message shows determination and the hope of success.

“I can make it in life.

Nobody could ever convince me to think that

I am a failure.

That is wrong.

I was meant to be great

Nobody would ever say

I am stupid.”

Indeed, our confidence comes from us. We should never allow anyone to convince us to think that we are a failure.
