My Journey from FEAR to SELF-CONFIDENCE

Image depicting My Journey from FEAR to SELF-CONFIDENCE

Initially, when I learned that I will be going to Jakartha,Indonesia, as a MUN delegate, I was really thrilled. What I didn’t realize was that soon afterwards I will start feeling frightened and nervous too. Frightened at the prospects of giving my best performance at this international conference, which would be attended by hundreds of children from many different countries.

Days, weeks and months passed in preparations, doing extensive research, being guided by mentors, learning about the rules of the MUN, and collecting my thoughts on the theme I was supposed to speak on and the country I was asked to represent, Liechtenstein.

And then came the hour of reckoning, my time to go to the conference, with the burden of my school’s, my family’s and my own reputation weighing on my little shoulders.

Everybody I knew as a delegate seemed to have everything ready with them – all their research papers, data, information, topics, DR etc. And I thought I was the only one under-prepared for this big challenge. On the day of the MUN, my teeth were chattereing like crazy. It felt as if someone dumped me into a pool full of ice and cold water. Waves of fear gripped me from inside.

But then, as I entered the conference room, things started to somehow feel positive. My self-confidence seemed to come back slowly. Something told me I will do well. So, by the time my turn to speak on my General Speaking List (GSL) came, I felt very confident. I spoke fluently on my Moderate Caucus topics too. And finally, when I spoke on my DR, I felt as if I did not know any fear at all.

Soon enough, the conference was over. I didn’t expect this but I was awarded the third position in my committee in my first MUN itself! Our school was also awarded two trophies.

What a transformative journey this turned out to be – from thrill, through fear, self-doubt, nervousness, dedicated work, support and guidance to finally confidence, performance and recognition. Having gone through all these experience, the most important lesson that I take for life is – Accept gracefully what life gives you, focus with dedication on maximizing your strengths and improving on your challenges, seek and receive help and blessings from your well-wishers and leave the rest to destiny.
