10-year-old boy finds ancient sword using a metal detectorFionntan Hughes is a 10-year-old boy who lives in Nothern Ireland, Europe.

In July, he got a metal detector for his birthday. While trying out his new birthday gift, he found an ancient sword!

A metal detector is an electronic instrument that detects the presence of metal nearby (which can be hidden).

The sword is very old and rusted and its age is not confirmed yet. But experts say that, by looking at the sword's pictures, the sword could be around 300-years-old. The sword design looks like it could be those used by English officers during the period 1720 to 1780.

Fionntan found the sword on his first trip out using the metal detector. He said he felt "quite excited" about the discovery.

Fionntan's father has spoken to an expert named Dr. Greer Ramsey about the sword. Dr. Ramsey works at the National Museums Northern Ireland. They are currently trying to find out how old it is and who could have used it.
