2023s first meteor shower!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

The Quadrantid meteor shower will be the first meteor shower of 2023. According to astronomers, it could be one of the most beautiful meteor showers of the year.

The meteor shower lasts from December 26 to January 16.

According to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) scientists, observers can anticipate seeing an average of 80 meteors per hour flying through the atmosphere of Earth.

The Quadrantid meteor shower draws its name from a constellation known as Quadrans Muralis.

Key facts!

  • The Lowell Observatory Near-Earth-Object Search (LONEOS) in 2003 led to the discovery of an asteroid with the designation 2003 EH1.
  • This asteroid left behind a debris track that became known as the Quadrantids.
  • The asteroid measures nearly 3 kilometres in diameter.
  • The meteor shower has the potential to produce up to 200 meteors per hour.
  • The Quadrantid meteor shower is notable for producing fireball meteors.
  • These fireball meteors are longer and brighter than regular meteors because they are created from larger fragments of debris than other meteor showers.
  • According to NASA, asteroid 2003 EH1 completes one circle around the sun every 5.52 years.
  • The Earth moves through the debris path of its parent planet at a right angle.
  • This means that the peak time for dust storms and tiny rock pieces is quite short.
  • The meteors will be visible all throughout the sky.
  • After the Quadrantids, the Lyrids will be the next significant meteor shower to occur.
  • This shower will be active from April 15 to April 29 in 2023, with its peak occurring between April 22 and April 23.
