50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing

50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon LandingToday is the 50th anniversary (celebration) of the human beings' first landing on the Moon!

Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that took the astronauts there.

The spacecraft landed on 20th July 1969.
 	American astronauts*, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first humans ever to step on the Moon.
 	They spent 21 hours, 36 minutes there - which is almost a day.
 	The astronauts were back to earth on 24th July 1969.
 	The return journey of Apollo 11 was 195 hours long (a little more than 8 days).
 	It splashed down safely into the Pacific Ocean.

The Apollo project

The American President John F. Kennedy announced the country's goal to send an American safely to the Moon.
 	This was never done by anyone and the American space agency, NASA, had to learn everything about it.
 	It designed the Apollo program to land humans on the Moon and bring them safely back to Earth.

The Apollo programmes' 11th mission (Apollo 11) finally made history with its successful human landing on the Moon.

India is sending a spacecraft, Chandrayaan-2, to the moon.

After a delay because of some problems, it is expected to be launched by the end of July.
