70 rare turtle hatchlings to live in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

70 rare turtle hatchlings to live in Pobitora Wildlife SanctuaryAbout 70 hatchlings (babies) of the rare black soft-shell and Indian soft-shell turtles were released in the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam yesterday.

Ugratara temple in Guwahati and Hayagriv Madhav temple in Hajo had worked together with the Assam Forest Department to revive these rare turtle species.
 	 Two NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations) named Turtle Survival Alliance and Help Earth also backed the initiative. These organisations work for the conservation of reptiles.
 	The turtles were hatched in the ponds of the two temples.
 	Then, the hatchlings were nurtured at a conservation facility at the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati.

The black softshell turtle was classified as extinct in the wild by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2002.
 	Once upon a time, they were abundant in the Brahmaputra river system.

Let us hope that this programme will help bring back these turtles to the Brahmaputra river.
