A rare flower – Titan Arum!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

There are hundreds of different varieties of flowers across the world. We generally connect flowers with lovely fragrances. But, there are certain blooms that are unusual and distinctive, like the ‘Titan Arum’.

It is scientifically known as ‘Amorphophallus titanum’, which means ‘Titan Arum’ in Latin. However, due of its particularly foul odour, it is popularly referred to as a corpse flower (dead body flower) in some circles.

A few interesting facts!

  • The titan arum blossom is the biggest flower on the planet.
  • It is a massive bloom that may reach heights of up to ten feet in some cases!
  • The flower is characterised by a fleshy spike in the centre that is encircled by a leaf-shaped structure.
  • Despite the fact that the plant may live for 4 to 10 years, it only produces blooms on a very infrequent basis.
  • However, if it does produce a bloom, it will remain open for about 48 hours after that.
  • It attracts insects and bees because of the scent it emits and the heat it generates while in full bloom.
  • The titan arum may be found in large quantities on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Due to deforestation, the titan arum is listed as vulnerable* by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
