A Rare Sight – 200 bird species in Delhi-NCR

A Rare Sight – 200 bird species in Delhi-NCROn 22nd May, 75 bird watchers set out at 5 AM to record the bird species present in the Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region).

This is done as part of the Delhi Summer Bird Count.

This is held every year to note the number and variety of species (the type of birds/ animals/ plants).

A total of 200 species was recorded, compared to 175 species found last year. An increase in rainfall could be one reason for this.
 	Most of these birds were mainly found in the Central Ridge forest area and the Yamuna floodplain, indicating that these are good bird habitats (places to stay) in New Delhi.

Bird count organiser Kanvar B Singh said that this year’s count was impressive.

The bird count is higher in winter because migrant birds start arriving from September and depart after March. They move from colder regions to India during winters.

The 200 species recorded this May proves that the city supports a rich birdlife.
