Recommended for Foundational Grades

What is Bhelpuri and why is it such a popular street food? Let us find out more.

  • There are different versions of who first invented bhelpuri but it is generally agreed that it started in Mumbai (like the vada-pav).
  • Bhelpuri is made with puffed rice and sev, mixed with vegetables like potatoes and onions.
  • Masala Chaat, chutney and a mixture of other fried snacks are also added to it.
  • Bhelpuri is especially loved for its balance of sweet, salty, sour and spicy flavours.

Bhelpuri has numerous types, the taste changing according to the region.  It is also known by different names such as jhalmuri in Bengali and churumuri or churmuri in Mangalore.

It is widely popular because it is cheap, tasty and can also be eaten on the go. Are you a street food lover? Then I am pretty sure, bhelpuri must be on the list. Do write to us about your favourite street food.
