Afforestation is the main key to protecting wildlife

We should take steps to preserve wildlife. Over the past years, there is a decline in the size of populations of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles. Afforestation and preservation of habitat is the only key to saving them.

What is afforestation?

Afforestation is when new trees are planted in the areas where there were no trees to create a forest.

Due to human activities, wildlife and natural habitats are affected. Afforestation, that is, tree plantation is the only way to preserve the habitats, wildlife and environment.

Benefits of Afforestation

Trees are a complete ecosystem and it fulfil the needs of man and animals in the same way. Afforestation has many benefits:

  • Soil preservation
  • Climate stabilization
  • Improved air quality
  • Quality of life

India has achieved 3 million hectares of forest area between 2011 and 2021 to achieve land degradation neutrality. India has committed to reducing carbon emissions by one billion tons by 2030. Afforestation will help in forest and wildlife preservation as trees absorb carbon from the atmosphere to create carbon sinks.

Many states have launched various programs to regulate afforestation in the country. Tree plantation has become Jan Andolan. It will help to build community awareness about afforestation.

One Health Concept

India is taking numerous steps towards wildlife and environment conservation. One Health Concept is one such step. It believes that human health, animal health and the environment are interconnected and dependant on each other.

Though pandemic has lessened the efforts the One Health Concept will help in the detection and prevention of health emergencies.
