Air quality in Delhi, Mumbai improves due to COVID-19 lockdown

Recommended for Middle Grades

According to an analysis by NASA, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the European Space Agency (ESA), the COVID-19 lockdown has greatly improved the air quality in Delhi and Mumbai. These are two of the most polluted cities in India.

The study shows that the concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) dropped to its lowest level. NO2 is a dangerous chemical that can cause breathing problems.

The three agencies use satellites to track changes in the atmosphere. The data is collected in a COVID-19 Earth Observation Dashboard.

According to the dashboard, there has been a 40 to 50% reduction in air pollution in Delhi and Mumbai this year as compared to last year. The level of pollution in the north-eastern states remained the same as industrial plants did not reduce pollution during the lockdown.

Additionally, according to the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), the lockdown also provided the cleanest continuous 54 days period for Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Chennai, Howrah, Kolkata, Jodhpur, and Visakhapatnam since 1 January 2019.

However, with lockdown relaxed, pollution has started to increase.
