Amazing Animals: Star-nosed moleDo you know what kind of animals moles are? Moles are small, furry animals that live underground.

Today, we will read about a very unique-looking member of the mole family - the star-nosed mole.

It is named so because it has a nose that looks like a star or an octopus!

Why does its nose look like that?

The star-like nose is covered with small sensory organs known as Eimer's organs.
 	The nose is about 1 cm in diameter and has roughly about 25,000 Eimer's organs on it!
 	Other moles also have Eimer's organs but not as much as this mole.
 	The star-nosed mole is almost fully blind but it uses the Eimer's organ to move about, sensing the place it is in as well as food nearby.

What else is amazing about this strange creature?

Despite its blindness, it is the world’s fastest eater! It can find and gobble down food in a quarter of a second.
 	It is also one of the only two mammals who can smell underwater. The other is the water shrew.

The star-nosed mole grows to about 12 cm, eats insects, small fishes, etc and can be found in the northern parts of North America.
