Amazing photo captures ‘red jellyfish sprites’ lightning in the skySometimes during a strong thunderstorm, we can see lightning in the sky. We all know what lightning looks like. But what if the lightning was red in colour and looked like a jellyfish? Don't worry, this is also a natural event but it is very rare.

The red lightning is called "sprites". Sprites are super-fast bursts of electricity which often look like alienlike jellyfish-style creatures hanging from the atmosphere. Since they are so fast, they are generally never seen by those people on the ground.

This is the kind of lightning which was captured on photo recently. The incredible photo (above) was taken at Mount Locke in West Texas, US in July.

It was taken by Stephen Hummel, an expert on dark skies, who has been searching the skies to photograph such a phenomenon.

Sprites usually occur high above Earth at about 80 km in the atmosphere. Since they occur so high up, it is easier to observe them from the International Space Station (ISS).

Sprites were first discovered in 1989. They have been seen in every continent except for Antarctica but we still know very little about them.
