Amazon tribes use drones to guard the rainforest

Amazon tribes use drones to guard the rainforestThe Amazon rainforest in South America is the world's largest rainforest.

It comes under nine different countries with the largest part of it within Brazil. It is home to many tribes who depend on the forest for food, medicine and more.

However, illegal forest fires and deforestation (cutting down large numbers of trees) threaten the survival of the forest. Illegal fires are started by people who want to clear the land for agriculture.

This badly affects the tribes. Not only that, without these forests, our planet's climate would also drastically change and affect us all badly.

That is why six different Amazonian tribes have joined forces to learn how to operate drones. They are doing this together with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and a Brazilian organisation called Kaninde Ethno-Environmental Defense Association,

They use the drones to map out hard-to-reach areas. The drones capture high-resolution images, videos, and maps, of places under illegal activities like illegal deforestation. These are then brought to local authorities.

Currently, 19 drones have been donated through the project to 18 organisations working on forest protection in the Amazon.

One of the six tribes in the project is called the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau. They live in a protected area of rainforest in the state of Rondonia, Brazil. The WWF reports that their work has been successful in helping authorities investigate illegal cutting down of trees in the region.
