An ancient oak tree in Italy is over 1000 years old

An ancient oak tree in Italy is over 1000 years oldOak trees are one of the oldest and most widely spread trees on this planet. Throughout history, humans have used oak trees to build homes, ships and tools.

A study has recently shown that an oak tree in Italy is over 1000 years old! It stands on a rocky slope on a mountain in the Aspromonte National Park.

It has been nicknamed Demeter, after the Greek goddess of harvest and agriculture,

This oak tree has survived freezing temperatures, snowstorms, high-speed winds, and drought (lack of rain). The area has a group of other ancient trees too.

Scientists did not think that such kind of trees could live for so long high up in the mountain.

Of course, there are other trees on Earth who have lived for much longer. Evergreen trees like pine and spruce can live for thousands of years.

Evergreen trees are those that do not lose their leaves even in winter. A spruce tree named Old Tjikko in Sweden is almost 10,000 years old.
