Antarctica hits 18.3°C, highest temperature on record

Antarctica hits 18.3°C, highest temperature on recordResearchers logged the highest-ever temperature on record in Antarctica on Thursday.

The temperature was 18.3°C, which is 0.8°C hotter than the previous record set in March 2015.

Where did they record the temperature?

Argentina's National Meteorological Service, Servicio Meteorológico Nacional recorded it at the Argentine research base Esperanza (see above image).
 	The base is located at the Antarctica Peninsula, one of the fastest-warming regions on Earth

What does the United Nations (UN) World Meteorological Organization (WMO) say?

The WMO says that they are in the process of verifying the information.
 	They say that, due to global warming, the Antarctic's temperatures have risen by almost 3°C over the past 50 years. Additionally, about 87% of the glaciers along its west coast have "retreated" at that time.

While this is a new record for the Antarctic continent, the highest temperature for the wider Antarctic region (the continent, islands and ocean in the Antarctic climatic zone) is 19.8°C, recorded in January 1982.

In July 2019, the Arctic region also hit its own record temperature of 21°C.
