Ants share food secrets!

Scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel wanted to figure out how ants know how much food their colony needs. They found out that the forager ants, the ones who bring food, use simple rules to decide what to do. When they have lots of food to carry, they go deeper into the nest. And when they have less food, they leave the nest to find more.
Now, let us share a secret with you. The foragers don't just randomly decide when to leave the nest. They leave special substances called pheromones along the way, like little scented trails, so other foragers can follow them to the food source. It's like leaving breadcrumbs for your friends to follow!
Scientists did some fun experiments to understand how foragers decide when to leave. They created a special computer model with little virtual ants on a plane. These ants could move around, just like real ants in the wild. The model helped them understand how ants behaved in different situations.
It turned out that when the colony is really hungry, the ants eat the food brought by the foragers quickly. This makes the foragers' food stock go down faster, so they leave the nest more often to get more food. But when the colony isn't so hungry, the ants eat less, and the foragers carry more food for a longer time, going deeper into the nest and hanging out with more ants.
