Artificial Intelligence develops the first-ever medical drug
Recommended for AI
We have read about Artificial Intelligence or AI. AI means the ability of a machine or computer programme to think and learn.
For the first time, a medical drug molecule has been created using AI.
- The drug molecule called DSP-1181 is the first non-man made drug.
- They will soon start Phase I of the testing of the drug molecule in Japan. (There are usually 3 phases of clinical trials where the medicine drug is tested on humans. Once the drug is safe after Phase III, it is approved for sale and use.)
- A British company called Exscienta has developed this drug molecule.
- It took only 12 months for AI to create the new drug. But when a drug is manually made, it takes around 5 years for preparing the drug for the clinical trials.
- Because AI takes lesser time to develop a drug, the Research and Development (R&D) cost for preparing the drug can be cut down by 80%.
- The drug will treat obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD. OCD is a disorder where people due to anxiety tend to repeat the same behaviours.
Though this is the first AI-created drug, scientists are very excited to use this technology to create more drugs in the future.
