What is a camera trap?

A camera trap is a camera with a motion detector. The motion detector turns the camera on when something changes in its immediate environment, like when an animal moves into the area.

  • In India over 3,000 tigers live in nearly 50 tiger reserves.
  • These reserves cover a total area of nearly 70,000 square kilometres.
  • Making sure that India’s tigers are safe is a huge job.
    • Even just making a rough guess about how many tigers there are is a hard task.
  • The Tiger Conservation Authority makes use of camera traps to take pictures in different areas of the reserves.
    • The camera traps to keep an eye on nearly 26,000 different areas.
    • On average these camera traps take 3.4 lac pictures.
  • The Tiger Conservation Authority uses artificial intelligence (AI) software to scan through all these pictures.
  • Artificial Intelligence is now used to assist rangers in patrolling huge areas in the most efficient way.
  • This is done by looking at data about the number of tigers, how they move, and the terrain of the area around them.
  • Artificial intelligence also helps rangers find crimes against wildlife.

As per officials, it is necessary to expand and make greater use of drones, video traps, real-time tracking of poachers, and metal detectors in order to protect endangered species.
