Artificial Intelligence turns Brain Signals into Speech

Artificial Intelligence turns Brain Signals into SpeechScientists have tested a machine that can read brain signals and convert it into speech. It combines the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI)  and speech synthesisers to do this. This is a big achievement in the field of AI and gives hope to many disabled people who cannot speak.

An article by researcher Nima Mesgarani at Columbia University, America, explains the success of their latest experiment where a machine can 'say' digits (0-9) out loud after scanning the image of a person's brain .
 	For this, brain patterns that get created when a person hears audio, were recorded and stored in a device called a 'vocoder'. This database of recordings was then used to read brain signals and produce speech. The experiment has shown good success rate.

British cosmologist Professor Stephen Hawking, who lost his power of speech due to an illness, used the help of a computer to convert his written words into spoken words. Now, with this latest experiment of creating speech from brain patterns, science has taken a big step ahead.
