Baby bats babble just like human babies!

Recommended for Middle Grades

Scientists found that the baby bats chuckle like human babies. They found that the bat babies develop their vocal skills in this way.

Ahana Fernandez, an animal behaviour scientist first heard this babbling of a bat pup (baby). She said that there is a difference of million years of evolutionary development between bats and humans.

So, it is amazing to find that bats have similar vocal practices to humans.

Mammals are often considered to be one of the most intelligent animals on Earth. Humans are also mammals.

Key facts!

  • The study says that human babies babble to practise speech and get extra control over their voice boxes.
  • Similarly, the baby bats also do something similar to get extra control over their vocal cords.
  • Ahana Fernandez and her colleagues recorded 216 babbling sounds in 20 wild baby bats  in Costa Rica and Panama in South America.
  • They used ultrasonic sound equipment to capture the syllables, that is, the sound produced by the bats.
  • They identified most of the 25 different syllables that are produced by adult bats.
  • Scientists converted the audio into images that show the pitch and intensity of the sounds.
  • With the help of the images, they found eight features that are similar to the babbles of human babies.

Science Magazine explores this fascinating idea.
