Barbados becomes the newest republic of the world

Barbados becomes the newest republic of the worldOn 30 November, the island nation of Barbados officially became a republic. The country also celebrated its 55th anniversary of independence on the same day.

Barbados is an island country in the West Indies, in the Caribbean region of the Americas. It was a British colony from the 1600s till 30 November 1966. However, it remained in the Commonwealth realm with the UK’s Elizabeth II as its queen.

The Queen of the UK, who was head of the country was officially removed. And Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as president in a midnight ceremony in the capital, Bridgetown. Dame Sandra Mason was the island's governor-general since 2018.

At the ceremony, the people made a final salute was made to the British monarchy and the Royal Standard flag was lowered and replaced. The Prince of Wales and Barbados singer Rihanna attended the event.

Prince Charles spoke at the ceremony and was also awarded the prestigious Order of Freedom of Barbados by the new president.
Commonwealth of Nations
Barbados announced its plan to become a republic last year and now it has. But it will remain within the Commonwealth of Nations. However, Queen Elizabeth II remains head of state in 15 countries.
