BBC World News banned from broadcasting in China

Recommended for Secondary Grades

China has banned BBC World News from airing in China as it has broken broadcast rules. This is as per a statement from China’s National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA).

The announcement comes one week after Ofcom, the UK media regulator, withdrew a license for China Global Television Network (CGTN). This stopped CGTN from airing in the United Kingdom. CGTN is China’s state-owned international news channel.

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) had also earlier caused controversy. It reported about China’s ill-treatment of its Uyghur and other ethnic Muslim minorities in the region of Xinjiang. China has denied all these reports.

However, this ban may not have much of an effect on mainland China. The BBC has never been allowed to broadcast in mainland China or into Chinese homes. But now, the BBC World News could also be banned in Hong Kong.

China and Britain’s relations have been getting worse as of late. There has been controversy over the UK’s support to Hong Kong (its former colony) which China has been trying to impose stricter control over. The UK also recently banned Chinese telecoms group Huawei from involvement in its 5G network.
