Become a Climate Hero: Join the Data Team!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away (well, actually the U.K.), a charity called Wellcome decided to give a HUGE amount of money—2.3 million dollars, to be exact—to a program all about data. Can you imagine that? Data!

But hey, it’s not just any program, it’s run by a fancy global organization called data.org, backed by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth. Talk about some serious backers!

Important Details

  • Now, this program wanted to do something really cool—they wanted to work with three universities in India (Ashoka University, the Indraprastha Institute for Information Technology, and BITS Pilani) to train one million Indians to use data and solve big problems like climate change and health issues. That’s a lot of data superheroes!
  • At a fancy event in Delhi, a big shot named Danil Mikhailov from data.org said, “There could be 3.5 million data professionals in the whole wide world, and we want India to be a part of that!” Woah, that’s a whole lot of people crunching numbers and saving the day!
  • But wait, there’s more! There’s this super-smart professor named Supratik Guha who knows all about soil chemistry and river pollution. He says that if we collect really tricky data about them, we can make smart decisions to fix things. And you know what? It’s not just about collecting data, it’s about how we share it too. A professor named Shawn A. Cole says that we need to make sure people trust the data and believe in it, otherwise they won’t do anything about it. Makes sense, right?
  • And guess what? The government has a ton of data too! This important person named Abhishek Singh says that if we use all that data, we can even predict and measure air pollution. Imagine that! We can figure out how to make the air cleaner and healthier for everyone.
  • So, my little friend, it looks like data is a big deal. With all these smart people and amazing programs, we’re going to make the world a better place, one number at a time!
