The result of the voting has been declared and the people of this island group have voted in favour of independence from Papua New Guinea.

98% of the people of the Autonomous Bougainville voted for complete independence.
 	There were celebrations around Buka (capital of the region) when the results were announced.

What happens next?

The referendum or voting was non-binding. This means that it is not necessary that Bougainville will become a new country anytime soon.
 	The Papua New Guinea parliament will have the final authority to accept Bougainville’s independence.
 	It is expected that the Papua New Guinea government will not completely ignore the referendum because a large percentage of people have voted for independence.

There are around 300,000 people who live on the islands of Bougainville. They live mostly in the villages outside the towns of Buka, Arawa and Buin.
