Carrier pigeon lost 110-year-old message found in France

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Did you know that a carrier pigeon used to deliver messages? These pigeons (called homing pigeons) were specially trained to deliver letters and find their way back home. They were often used to deliver secret messages during soldiers in the army.

Recently, a 110-year-old message lost by a carrier pigeon turned up in France!

The message was sent from one German military officer to another in 1910. It was found in a field in Ingersheim in France. At that time, this area used to be part of Germany.

The message, written on a tiny piece of paper, was folded up inside a small aluminium capsule.

The message in it reads: “Platoon Potthof receives fire as they reach the western border of the parade ground, platoon Potthof takes up fire and retreats after a while.

“In Fechtwald half a platoon was disabled. Platoon Potthof retreats with heavy losses.”

These kinds of messages are very rarely found. It will now be shown at the Linge Memorial Museum in France.
