Chandrayaan 2: Meet the women directors leading India’s second mission to the MoonAs ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) is preparing for the big launch of Chandrayaan 2, the two women directors of the mission - M.Vanitha and Ritu Karidhal are in the limelight*.

For the first time in ISRO’s history, a space mission is being led by women.

M.Vanitha is the Project Director and Ritu Karidhal is the Mission Director.
 	The Project Director is responsible for the entire project from its start till completion. The Mission Director oversees the mission and coordinates with various agencies and institutions.

Since space science has been mostly dominated by men, their achievement is considered a big step forward for women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

Both of them have worked with ISRO for more than 20 years.

Ritu Karidhal was the deputy operations director of India’s Mangalyaan mission to Mars.
 	She received the ISRO Young Scientist Award in 2007 from President APJ Abdul Kalam.
 	M.Vanitha received the Best Woman Scientist Award in 2006 from the Astronomical Society of India.
 	She was also selected by Nature magazine as the top scientist to look out for in 2019.
