Chaos & Disruption: Chennai Rains’ Impact!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

In Chennai, a city in India, heavy rains caused some important changes to flights on Monday, June 19, 2023. Heavy rains in Chennai caused 10 international flights to be diverted to Bengaluru airport. While seven of them later landed at Chennai airport.

Three more flights are still expected to arrive. Additionally, some flights were delayed due to the weather conditions. However, Chennai Metro Rail services remained unaffected, running as scheduled.

Let’s find out in detail what happened and how it affected people’s travel plans.

Flight Disruptions, Resilient Metro

  • Chennai experienced heavy rains overnight, causing some difficulties for flights. The rainwater made it challenging for airplanes to safely land at the Chennai airport.

  • A total of 10 flights from different countries were unable to land at Chennai airport. Instead, they were diverted to Bengaluru airport, another city close by.

  • Out of the 10 flights that were initially diverted, seven of them managed to land at Chennai airport later in the morning. These flights came from Singapore, Colombo, Sharjah, Muscat, and Abu Dhabi. Unfortunately, three flights from Doha, Dubai, and London are still expected to arrive shortly.

  • Apart from the flights that were diverted, many other flights scheduled to arrive in Chennai were also delayed due to the bad weather. This means that the planes couldn’t reach Chennai at the expected time and needed to wait until the weather conditions improved.

  • Even though it rained heavily, the runway at Chennai airport did not get flooded with water. This was because the airport had made improvements to its drainage system, which helped clear the water away. So, the planes could still take off and land safely.

  • The Chennai Metro Rail, a train system in the city, has been running smoothly and on time since 5 a.m. Despite the rain. People can continue to rely on the metro for their travel needs, as it has not been affected by the weather.
