China launches astronauts to build space station

China launches astronauts to build space stationEarlier, we read that China is building its own space station named Tiangong (or Heavenly Palace). It even launched a part of it just recently.

Yesterday, China also launched three astronauts into space to build the station.

They went to space on the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft. It was launched on a Long March-2F carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in China.
The mission
This is China's first space mission with astronauts in 5 years. The astronauts will stay there for three months. They will set up the space station and test out different equipment. During this time, they also will conduct 2 spacewalks.

Chinese astronaut Nie Haisheng is leading the mission. He is a former fighter pilot and the oldest member of the team. The other two are Liu Boming and Tang Hongbo.

After this, China will launch three more astronaut missions and also send more parts of the station to complete everything.

If everything goes well, Tiangong should be operational by 2022. China says that other countries' astronauts will also be welcome on the station once it is complete.
