China reports first human case of rare bird flu strain

Bird flu (also called avian influenza) is a highly infectious disease that affects birds. It can infect domestic as well as wild birds and animals.
It is a zoonotic disease. This means it is a disease that can spread from animals to humans. But bird flu infections in humans are not that common.

- There are different strains (types) of the bird flu virus. Some of them, but not all, have been known to infect people.
- China’s National Health Commission (NHC) has reported the first human case of infection with a rare bird flu strain called H10N3.
- A patient is a 41-year-old man from Zhenjiang City in Jiangsu province.
- He is said to be doing well and is ready to be discharged from the hospital.
- It is believed that the H10N3 strain does not easily spread from human to human.
- The infection is also not very severe for humans or birds.
- As of now, no other human cases of the same H10N3 strain have been reported globally.
