Chinese parliament approves controversial Hong Kong security lawWe have read about China's One Country, Two Systems policy. Under this system, Hong Kong and Macau can have different economic and political systems from that of mainland China, while still being part of China.

However, last year, there were great protests in Hong Kong. This was due to the new extradition law that Hong Kong people felt to bring them under mainland China's control. It was withdrawn later.

Recently, China’s National People’s Congress (parliament) has approved a decision to force a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. It has led to great protests in Hong Kong.

What is the law about?

The law aims to stop "anti-national" actions as well as “acts of foreign interference” and terrorism in Hong Kong.
 	It would also allow mainland China's security forces to operate in the city.
 	It does not need the approval of the Hong Kong legislature.
 	It aims to stop the protests that have affected Hong Kong for the past year. A detailed law will be drafted and put into action soon.

Many countries are concerned as these similar laws are often used in mainland China to silence political opponents or people who protest against the government.

Critics worry it will affect the city’s freedoms and rights.

What happens next?

Protests are likely going to worsen in Hong Kong as thousands of people have taken to the streets. At least 360 people were arrested in Hong Kong on Wednesday.
 	The law has also worsened relations between China and the US, which are already bad. The US said that it will cancel Hong Kong’s special trade status.
