City of Pilgrimage – VaranasiVaranasi is a pilgrimage city on the banks of the river Ganga.

Varanasi is one of the holiest pilgrimage spots for Buddhists, Jains and Hindus.
 	It is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism and one of the oldest living cities in the world.
 	Located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, it is also known as  Benares/Banaras or Kashi.

Varanasi has been a centre of learning and civilization for over 3000 years.
 	Apart from its religious importance, it is also famous for its muslin and silk fabrics, perfumes and sculpture.
 	Benaras is also famous for its beautiful saris and a majority of the residents of Varanasi work in silk weaving, carpets, crafts and tourism.

Buddhists revere this city as it is believed that Buddha founded Buddhism here around 528 BCE.
 	The great Indian poet Tulsidas also wrote his epic poem on Rama's life called Ram Charit Manas in Varanasi.
 	The city is also famous for its ‘ghats’ where Ganga aarti and many other rituals take place.

Banaras Hindu University located in Varanasi is also believed to be the largest residential university in Asia.
