The government of India celebrates Civil Services Day on April 21, every year. The celebration commemorates the day when Independent India’s first Home Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel addressed the probationary officers of Administrative Services in 1947 at Metcalf House, Delhi.

Civil Services in India consist of three All India Services – Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) – and  Group A and Group B of Central Services.

Important Details

  • On the occasion he referred to ‘civil servants’ as the ‘Steel Frame of India’.
  • On this day civil servants re-dedicate themselves to the society.
  • They renew their commitments to social service, welfare of citizens and excellence in work.
  • Central Government uses this opportunity to award various departments under the civil services.
  • Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Administration are also presented to districts on this day.
  • Administrators all over the country share with each other, the good governance practices being implemented in their respective fields.
