COVID-19 cases increase in Delhi amidst high pollution during Diwali

India registered 30,548 fresh COVID-19 cases and infections in the last 24 hours, the lowest daily cases in four months.

India now has reported more than 8.84 million COVID-19 cases so far. About 8.2 million of those have recovered, pushing the national recovery rate to 93.27%.

Even though there is a ban on firecrackers in Delhi and nearby cities, people still burst crackers on Diwali. On Saturday, the AQI (air quality index) was recorded above 700 in some places. It was the worst air quality seen in Delhi since 2016 on Diwali.

The air quality was in the “severe” category in Delhi the next day, AQI going beyond 700 and thick smog covered many parts of the city. However, rain and winds helped improve air quality levels slightly on Sunday.

Hospitals in Delhi are facing a shortage of beds as COVID-19 cases continue to increase. However, the Delhi government said that there are no plans to reimpose COVID-19 lockdown in Delhi.

The first batch of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine for COVID-19 has reached India. Tests of the vaccine will be conducted on human volunteers.

A study has shown that there is an increase in mental health problems among patients who suffered from COVID-19.

Maharashtra has opened all religious places from today.

What is the situation worldwide?

Till now, about 54.4 million COVID-19 cases have been reported worldwide. The US crossed 11 million coronavirus cases on Sunday. Europe continues to fight a rising number of cases.

Britain wants to start using the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine just before Christmas if it is declared safe and effective.
