COVID-19: India approves world’s first DNA COVID-19 vaccine

Recommended for Middle Grades

India today reported 34,457 COVID-19 cases. This is slightly lower than yesterday. Kerala leads states in the most number of Covid cases daily.

Several states are preparing for a possible third wave of the pandemic with a focus on children. They are building facilities with more beds for children, plus oxygen. The concern is that many children are returning to school without being vaccinated and so, may get sick.

Vaccine for children above 12 years

India has approved its first vaccine for children aged 12 years and above. The vaccine is made by the pharmaceutical company Zydus Cadila. It is a three-dose vaccine called ZyCoV-D. Moreover, it is the sixth vaccine authorised for use in India.

ZyCoV-D is also the world’s first DNA vaccine against the COVID-19 virus. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid) are building blocks of life. They are molecules that carry that genetic information that is passed on from parents to children. The vaccine uses genetic material from the virus to teach the body’s immune system to fight the real virus.

The situation across the world

New Zealand has extended its COVID-19 lockdown.

The Paralympic Games are about to begin on 24 August in Tokyo, Japan. However, the country is reporting a record number of COVID-19 cases.
