Cricket: Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 begins on 17 October

The ICC (International Cricket Council) has announced the dates for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. It was supposed to have been held in India last year but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The World Cup will be held in Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 17 October to 14 November. Oman will take on Papua New Guinea in the opening match of the tournament on 17 October.

First round

The first part of the tournament will be among countries in Group A and B. Group A consists of Ireland, Netherlands, Sri Lanka and Namibia. On the other hand, Group B will have Oman, Papua New Guinea, Scotland and Bangladesh. This stage will end on 22 October and the top two teams in each group will proceed to the next stage. The next stage of the tournament is the Super12 stage which begins on 23 October.

Super12 stage (second round)

The Super 12 stage will begin on 23 October. The first match is between Australia and South Africa at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi (UAE).

Here, there will also be two groups. India’s group (2) will have Afghanistan, New Zealand and two qualifiers from Round 1. India’s first match will be against Pakistan in Dubai, UAE on 24 October.

The other group (1) consists of England, Australia, South Africa, the West Indies and two qualifiers from Round 1.

The T20 Cricket World Cup final will be held in Dubai at 6 pm local time on 14 November. The next day (15 November) will also be a reserve day.

West Indies are the current T20 World Cup holders. They beat England in 2016, winning their second title.
