Delhi-NCR air quality drops to “very poor”

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Let’s learn about Delhi-NCR air quality.

On Thursday, the Delhi – NCR air quality dropped to the “very poor” category and is expected to get worse over today and tomorrow.

Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has been recorded at 302, which is in the ‘very poor’ category. AQI measures the quality of the air and how polluted it is.

While cities like Delhi do have a lot of pollution due to cars, etc, it gets worse around this time of the year. Poor air quality  (worse than usual) during or before winter is a yearly problem in Delhi.

This recent drop in Delhi-NCR air quality is due to a reduction in wind speed and a change in wind direction. This change in wind direction is bringing pollution from crop burning fires in Haryana and Punjab.

In order to fight this problem, the Delhi government launched the ‘Red Light On, Gaadi Off’ anti-pollution campaign. It requests people to turn off their car engines while waiting at red lights.

Other areas in the National Capital Region (NCR) such as Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, Panipat also recorded “very poor” air on Thursday.

What is stubble or crop burning?

Stubble burning is intentionally setting fire to the dry plants that remain after grains, like paddy, wheat, etc., have been harvested.

This is done to clear the field for the next planting season and kill pests too. Many farmers do this as it is the cheapest way to clear the field but it is a major cause of air pollution.
