Destroyed Buddha statues in Afghanistan honoured with 3D projections

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Did you know that Afghanistan was once home to the tallest standing Buddha statues in the world?

The two statues were of Lord Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. They were carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamiyan valley in Afghanistan. Sadly, in 2001, they were destroyed by the Taliban government, which believed it was against their culture.

People around the world were horrified by this destruction and they still continued to visit the area.

On 9 March 2021, an event was held to honour the 20th year of the Buddha statues destruction. The Bamiyan Buddhas were “brought back to life” in the form of 3D projections, along with a lantern-lit procession.

A Night With Buddha

The event was called “A Night With Buddha”. The organisers wanted people to remember this incident and make sure that such things do not happen again.

The Buddha statues had been built in the early 6th and 7th Centuries CE when Buddhism was the region’s main religion.

Islam is the main religion in Afghanistan now but persevering a country’s history is always important.
