A 900-year-old sword

A man named Shlomi Katzin was recently exploring the sea near northern Israel. To his surprise, he came across an ancient sword. How ancient? It is 900 years old!

The sword is 1 metre long and experts believe that it belong to a crusader knight 900 years ago. Because of its age, it has many marine organisms attached to it.

Who were the crusaders?

The crusaders were knights (soldiers) from Europe who participated in a series of religious wars supported and started by the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages.

The most well known Crusades were those to the Holy Land (Jerusalem). They aimed to release Jerusalem and its surrounding area from Islamic rule. So, the 900-year-old sword likely belonged to a crusader to came to Jerusalem to fight.

The sword

Experts think that the 900-year-old sword could be linked to the crusaders’ citadel (castle) nearby at Atlit, a nearby town. Moreover, they believe that looking at its size, the person who used the sword must have been tall and strong.

The Israel Antiques Authority (IAA) said that once they clean and analyse it, they will put it on public display.
