A dazzling light show

What are leeks?

Leeks are long thin vegetables, related to onions. The plant is white at one end with thin green leaves.

Dutch designer and artist Daan Roosegaarde turned a field of ordinary leeks in the Netherlands into a dazzling light show at night. The show celebrates the importance of crops that feed us all.

The light show called GROW, used LED light beams. The humble field of leeks is transformed at night as beams of light from projectors make it look like there are blue and red spirits everywhere.

The science behind the show

However, the display is not just to make things look pretty. It is inspired by actual scientific studies. These studies say that certain combinations of light colours can actually raise healthier crops, without having to use harmful chemicals.

Earlier, Daan’s Studio Roosegaarde also created billboards in Mexico that can purify trees.
