An ecology photo contest had some wonderful picture entries. Let’s learn more about it.

An image of a flying Dalmatian Pelican has been awarded Overall Winner in the photo contest ‘Capturing Ecology’.

This annual contest is organised by the British Ecological Society. Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with one another and with their physical environment.

The winning ecology photo is called ‘The art of flight‘. It was taken by Alwin Hardenbol from the University of Eastern Finland. Hardenbol said she had to take thousands of pictures to get the perfect shot.

The Dalmatian pelican is the largest type of pelican. It is threatened by the loss of its natural habitats.

Along with Hardenbol’s photo, 16 other photos were selected for prizes in the ecology photo contest. Hardenbol also won in the ‘People and Nature’ category with an image of a black-legged kittiwake bird.

Another winner was Upamanyu Chakraborty, a researcher at the Wildlife Institute of India. His entry was a photo (see below) on weaver ants and their social behaviour, taken in a backlit situation.

Other winning ecology photos include flamingos feasting at sunset and a close-up of a friendly humphead wrasse (a huge coral reef fish).

The photos were all taken by international ecologists and students. The ecology photos celebrate plants and animals across the planet. See all the winners here.
