Elephants – World’s largest land animals
Elephants are the world’s largest land animals. They have large ears, tusks (long pointed tooth) and trunks. There are 2 main *species of elephants:
- Asian
- African
It is said that you can tell where an elephant comes from by looking at the size of its ears. African ears are like a map of Africa and Asian ears are smaller, like the shape of India.
Elephant Tusks
- Elephant tusks never stop growing.
- Both male and female African elephants grow tusks.
- Only male Asian elephants grow them. Asian females don’t have tusks.
An elephant spends 12 to 18 hours every single day eating grass, plants and fruit. Their long trunks help to smell food and lift it up into their mouth.
Elephant population
- Elephants are in trouble!
- Asian elephants are categorized as Endangered (in danger of becoming *extinct).
- African elephants are listed as Vulnerable (at risk of becoming Endangered).
People need to act together to protect this beautiful animal. Let’s say NO to ivory products (made from elephant tusks) and NO to elephant rides. What do you think? *species: a category of living organisms that are similar *extinct: having no living members
