EV charging road – Detroit, United States

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

We introduced our readers to Germany opening its first electric highway for trucks.  A lot has changed since then, as more and more electric vehicles make it to the mainstream markets. Electreon is a company that provides wireless charging for electric vehicles on the go. Essentially they provide the design (EV charging road) and expertise to make roads that will charge electric vehicles.

EV charging road – Electric Road System (ERS)

At the fundamental level, Electric Road System (ERS) is a road that supplies electric power to vehicles travelling on it. In partnership with the Michigan Department of Transportation, Electreon will develop a 1-mile stretch in Detroit to demonstrate its capability.

Alternative to charging stations

One of the most important concerns while using electric vehicles is its charging. Electric charging stations do provide a solution. Electric roads (e-Road) does seem like an alternative that could be explored. It would be a great idea to put a mixed model in place. States will have both electric stations for charging and important or short roads could be based on ERS. These roads could provide essential and emergency services as an example.

We are sure costs and other factors will come into play but the idea seems extremely interesting, innovative and futuristic.

Electreon has projects in Germany, Italy and Sweden that is working on providing wireless charging road networks to public transportation.
