Extreme Storms Awaiting – NASA Warns

Extreme Storms Awaiting – NASA WarnsOur oceans are warming at an alarming rate. A study published by the peer-reviewed journal ‘Science Advances’ says that ocean surface is heating up at an average of 40% faster as compared to previous study reports.

A similar study by NASA‘s Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, California, shows that the ocean warming can lead to rise in frequency of extreme rain storms. The study was published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
 	Such extreme storms can produce at least 3 millimetres of rain per hour over a 25-kilometre area. These storms are formed when the sea surface temperature is higher than about 28 degrees Celsius.
 	Researchers also found that 21 per cent more storms form for every 1 degree Celsius that ocean surface temperatures rise.
 	More storms result in more floods and extreme droughts – unbalanced climatic conditions.
