First living robots that can reproduce – Xenobots
Last year Scientists had showcased the first living robots “Xenobots“. Xenobots have the ability to perform certain tasks. Although their size is very small (about the size of a grain or less than 0.04 mm), they have the ability to move microscopic objects, move around and heal themselves.
Which animal species is the Xenobots named after?
Xenobots are named after the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis).
Important Details
- Xenobots lack a brain and digestive system. However, scientists can program them to do some limited tasks.
- In the latest development, scientists believe these living robots can multiply or reproduce. The way of this is unique and has not been observed by science as yet.
- When put in a dish full of independently floating frog skin cells, they circle merrily, randomly pushing the free-floating cells into a bunch. Some of the xenobots stick together to then form new xenobots.
- However, there is a limit to the number of baby xenobots that each bunch can create. The self-multiplying process is delicate and done under strict supervision in a lab.
- Scientists are hopeful as development and research progress, the Xenobots could be used to deliver medicines within the body or clean up environmental contaminants.
