Former French president Jacques Chirac passes away

Former French president Jacques Chirac passes awayFormer French President Jacques Chirac passed away on 26 September at the age of 86.

The French National Assembly observed a minute's silence in his memory.

He had suffered from memory loss for several years following a minor stroke he had while in office.
 	Mr Chirac was the French President from 1995 to 2007 and had one of the longest continuous political careers in the history of Europe.
 	He was twice President, twice Prime Minister and was also the Mayor of France for 18 years.
 	Mr Chirac will be remembered for leading France’s strong opposition to the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
 	He also led France into using the Euro, the common currency of the European Union.
 	Mr Chirac was the first French head of state to fully acknowledge France’s guilt in allowing the bad treatment of thousands of Jews by Nazis during World War II.
 	For decades, he charmed the public with his charming and colourful personality. However, he also became the first former president to faces charges of corruption.

Many world leaders including PM Modi expressed their condolences at his passing.
