Frozen bats brought back to life!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Volunteers from the Houston Humane Society found 1,500 bats frozen under a bridge. Thanks to their persistent efforts the bats are flying again.

What is the Houston Humane Society?

Houston Humane Society (HHS) is a pet rescue, pet adoption, and animal shelter that serves the Houston, Texas area in the United States.

Even though there are many animals that are easier to love and care for than bats, the Houston Humane Society saved them from freezing to death.

Key facts!

  • A cold wave in Texas, United States forced these little winged mammals to fall from the sky onto the icy pavement.
  • If it weren’t for the volunteers who collected them in large numbers for restoration, it’s likely that all of them would have died.
  • One of the volunteers was out doing some holiday shopping when she started to become concerned about the colony of bats that lives underneath the Bridge.
  • As expected, she discovered around one hundred lifeless bodies spread across the ground.
  • The volunteer would make two trips a day to retrieve them.
  • Firstly, she would place them in containers on the heated seats of her vehicle.
  • Secondly, she would transfer them to incubators located in her loft.
  • With the help of additional volunteers, they were able to transport all of the frozen bats to warmth.
  • According to medical experts, the majority of bats need nothing more than a speedy injection of fluids and some warmth.
  • While others required additional time spent in the incubator’s warm environment.
  • The Houston Humane Society has successfully carried out two mass releases of bats back under their respective bridges.
