150th Gandhi Jayanti – 2 October 2019Today is Gandhi Jayanti - a celebration to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who is considered to be the  'Father of the Nation'. This year is his 150th-year birth anniversary.

Today is also the International Day of Non-Violence, which the United Nations observes in Gandhiji's honour.

Mahatma Gandhi was born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on 2 October 1869 in Gujarat.
 	He was an anti-colonial nationalist and freedom fighter who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the fight for India's independence from British Rule.
 	Gandhiji's words and actions have also inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
 	He was a lawyer by training, who first worked in South Africa. It was there that he first used nonviolent resistance in a campaign for civil rights.
 	Gandhiji led nationwide campaigns in India for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic unity, ending untouchability, and above all for achieving Swaraj (or self-rule).
 	He believed in simplicity, self-sufficiency and peace and led a simple life.

Gandhiji was assassinated on 30 January 1948 as he was fasting to stop religious violence after the partition of India.

This day is celebrated as a national holiday.

The government, organisations and individuals are paying their respects to him on this day by offering prayers, conducting events to create more awareness about his teachings, and more.
 	The government has also initiated various programmes to coincide with this day, which include a partial ban on single-use plastic. The ban on single-use plastic will be implemented fully at a later stage.
 	Many countries including Palestine, Turkey and Uzbekistan have issued stamps in his honour today.
