Garlic – China’s first cloned cat

Recommended for Biotechnology

Chinese businessman Huang Yu has become the proud owner of China’s first cloned cat.

  • When his beloved cat named Garlic died, Mr Huang was very sad. So, he decided to get a cloned version of Garlic.
  • He paid about ¥250,000 (about US$35,000) to biotechnology company Sinogene to clone Garlic.
  • The resulting cloned kitten, also named Garlic, was born on 21st July 2019.

However, the new Garlic does not look exactly like the previous one even though they have the same DNA. There are slight differences in eye colour and fur.

Cloning is the scientific process of making an identical copy of an organism. Cloning also happens in nature among plants, fungi, bacteria, etc. A sheep named Dolly was the first mammal ever cloned.

Sinogene is a Chinese biotechnology company, started in 2015, that clones pets.

  • Sinogene has so far cloned 40 dogs, each at the cost of US$53,000.
  • Garlic is the first cat Sinogene has cloned.
  • Sinogene says that it is currently attempting to clone a horse.
  • Eventually, it also aims to clone endangered animals, such as pandas and the South China tiger.
